Absence Of The Moon

It is 4:30 in the morning. I am looking out my kitchen window. All I see is a single star. I can't even find the moon. I go to another window facing south. I see a different lone star. Again there is no moon. "It is not the sky of my childhood," I think to myself.

It must be a new moon phase. The moon is not visible because no sunlight is reflected by the moon and the side that is lit up is facing away from the earth. Thus, the absence of the stars that the moon may be covering up.
